Business Security Tips: Common Tactics Used by Shoplifters

imageBelieve it or not, each year, businesses all across the U.S. lose a significant amount of money due to shoplifting. If you have a retail store, you are likely painfully aware of this fact.

While there is no way to completely eliminate shoplifting, there are ways you can prevent these nefarious individuals from taking advantage of the five-finger discount.

The absolute best way to prevent shoplifting in your store is to stop it before anything is stolen. While this is easier said than done, there are some methods that will allow you to get the upper hand regarding your retail business.

Install a video surveillance system. These systems are able to help you control shoplifting. Also, if you have someone monitoring the video, you can get to know common behaviors of shoplifters and prevent this action altogether.

In addition to installing a quality video surveillance system, get to know some of the common tactics used by shoplifters, including the following:

  • Changing rooms/restrooms. Some shoplifters will take products into these areas and hide the items on their body or in their purse.
  • The baby carriage. Both men and women who are pushing a baby stroller may begin putting items inside.
  • New accessories. Watch for people coming in the store with no purse, hat or jewelry and leaving with these items.
  • Plastic or paper bags. Some shoplifters carry shopping bags from store to store and drop merchandise inside when no one is looking.

The best way to prevent shoplifting is by installing a robust business security system; however, getting to know the way shoplifters operate can also be beneficial.

Have You Been Making these All-too-Common Home Security Mistakes?

imageThere is no question that a quality home security system can offer great protection; however, even the most modern and advanced system is not able to totally override human error. For homeowners who want to keep burglars at bay, they should do the following to avoid some of the most common security mistakes, which have been highlighted here.

Allowing mail and newspapers to pile up. If you let your newspapers pile up in your driveway or on your porch for several days, it is a clear indication no one is at home. Ask a neighbor, friend or even family member to pick up your mail and papers while you are away.

Not checking window and door locks. If you leave a window or door unlocked, it will result in your entire home being vulnerable. Be sure to check locks regularly to make sure they are secure and not open. Your alarm company can likely install sensors that let you know when windows or doors are open and that can be controlled from a smart device.

Not trimming shrubs around the house. Large trees and overgrown shrubs are the ideal hiding places for would-be thieves. It is essential to trim any shrubs and trees that may be covering any lower windows. This will prevent your home from becoming an “easy target.” Also, cut any bigger branches that may let a burglar climb to second story windows.

Not arming your security system. Having a security system is great, but if you don’t arm it, it does no good. Security systems are the ideal way to keep your home safe, but you have to remember to turn it on. You may want to consider installing the control panel near the door, or using a mobile security application for remote access and control.

When you use these tips and are aware of what is going on, your home and family will remain safe and secure.

Personal Safety Apps to Consider Installing On Your Mobile Device

imageOne of the very best ways to protect your home and your family is by installing a quality, robust home security system. However, you may wonder what options are out there to help you avoid becoming a victim of some type of violent crime when you are away from home or alone. If you own a mobile device, such as a smartphone, the fact is, you are never really alone. If you are concerned for your safety there are a number of apps you can download.

Some of the apps to consider installing on your device are highlighted here.

React Mobile. This app will turn your phone into a lifeline. It has a follow-me feature that allows you to share your location with family members and friends. They can then track your location in real-time and make sure you arrive at your destination safely.

EmergenSee. It allows you to let a pre-selected group of people in your contact list know your GPS location and stream live video if you find yourself in a bad situation. You only have to tap on the app one time and your contacts will be able to immediately see, follow and hear everything going on. This personal safety app also includes the ability to alert campus security in certain locations.

Watch Over Me. This app was invented by someone who actually escaped an attempted kidnapping. This app will allow you to let your emergency contacts follow you remotely on your journey. You can adjust your settings and if you don’t check in at a certain time, a message is sent to the pre-programmed contacts. The camera is also activated when this happens.

Being prepared is essential in today’s world. These apps will help you be safer and have peace of mind if you are alone.
