Respecting Historical Properties: Tips for Security without Impacting Integrity

image

Do you own a historical piece of property you have transformed into your business or office? If so, there’s a good chance you want to secure the space. However, did you know there are steps you can take to do this without ruining the historical integrity of the building?

The key is to know what to do, and more importantly, what to avoid. Keep reading to learn more.

Some options to keep in mind when installing a security system for your historic building include:

  • Use recessed burglary sensors in your doors to keep them hidden from view
  • Use motion detectors and encrypted wireless contacts to avoid problematic wire runs
  • Install glass break sensors, providing a second-layer of protection

If you have plans to install a surveillance system, then there are a few things to keep in mind when working with a historic building. These things include:

  • It’s often difficult to drill through brick or stone that’s been in place for a long period of time. Instead, use the mortar joints to keep from causing damage to the expensive façade.
  • Think about alternative wire routing to help limit the exposure in areas with asbestos or other types of hazardous materials.

If you are working to secure an older building, be sure you choose a contractor with prior experience handling this type of work. After all, the unpredictable nature of historic building construction is costly, so, it’s important to hire someone who knows what they are doing when it comes to securing the building.

By understanding the architecture and working to keep the foundation intact, you can avoid causing issues with the historic building, while still providing your business or office the security features needed.

3 Summer Safety Reminders for Families

For many children, summertime is the best time of the year. No more school, ice cream and popsicles and – did we mention – no more school? However, if you are a parent, summertime presents more of a challenge.

From trying to organize activities and babysitters there’s an endless to-do list for most parents. As a result, many don’t take time to consider home security.

If you want to ensure that you and your children have a carefree summer, then make sure to make security a top priority. Three summer time reminders to help keep you, your family and your home safe are found here.

1. Always Lock Up

It’s crucial that you don’t forget to lock up when heading out. According to statistics, crime usually goes up during the summer. If you hire someone to watch after your children, make sure they know how to secure your house – including all the doors and windows, garages and any other place someone may gain access to the home. For even more protection, consider installing some of the security equipment listed here:

  • Door and window sensors
  • Smart locks
  • Video doorbell
  • Glass break detectors

Make sure your children know how to use all the equipment to keep them safe.

2. Check in Often

There are a few ways you can see what’s going on at your home during the summer, even while you are at work. Some of the most popular options include:

  • Install a surveillance system that provides real-time video streaming
  • Install doorbell cameras
  • Consider joining or starting a neighborhood watch organization

3. Be Available

You need to make sure you are available if an emergency occurs. Have a phone with you, and also have backup numbers for your kids, their babysitters, neighbors and others who may be able to alert you if something is going on at your house while you are away.

When you take the time to secure your home, both you and your children can have a summer that’s more fun.

How the Cloud is Transforming Residential and Commercial Security

image

Chances are you have heard of the cloud. You may even use it for backing up and storing photos, files and more. However, do you know what it really is? And, are you aware of what the cloud is doing for the security industry?

If not, you’re in the right place. Read more about how the cloud is transforming residential and commercial security, here.

The Cloud – Explained

Put simply, cloud computing is delivering hosted services over the internet. What makes the cloud so innovative and revolutionary is the fact that now, you can access it from anywhere. This has helped to redefine the security paradigm.

Benefits of the Cloud for Commercial Security

The cloud security applications available today are transformative for businesses. They enable smart buildings and remote-control access, along with sophisticated 24/7 monitoring. The ability to grant or revoke access can be done instantly and from anywhere, and the cloud also provides for complex video analytics.

Benefits of the Cloud for Home Security

The cloud is the backbone of today’s smart home trend. It is paving the way for security systems to be integrated with automation solutions. No longer are you tied to a keypad. With the cloud, you are able to manage the security of your home remotely. From answering the door to arming or disarming the alarm system – it’s all now in the palm of your hands, thanks to the cloud.

As you can see, the cloud is an integral part of both home and commercial security today. Even if you weren’t aware you were using it, if you have a security system, you likely are.
